Multi-unit developments toolkit

Increasing numbers of multi-unit developments (MUDs) are being built across metropolitan Melbourne to accommodate our growing population. However, MUDs have their own unique challenges when it comes to waste management and resource recovery.

MUDs often experience lower resource recovery rates and higher contamination rates, mainly due to inadequate waste management design and planning for the building.

MWRRG has addressed the need for improved waste management and resource recovery in MUDs by developing a toolkit to assist local councils.

The Improving resource recovery in multi-unit developments (MUDs) toolkit will assist councils to adopt and implement waste management planning considerations for multi-unit developments (3 storeys and below) into their planning approvals process.

Specifically, it will assist councils to:

  • understand how to effectively achieve state government policies and guidelines for waste management and recycling through the planning permit process for MUDs, apartment and mixed use developments
  • understand the role, scope and statutory weight of waste management plans (WMPs) and considerations for council’s planning approval processes
  • increase capability and confidence to negotiate and assess design of waste and recycling facilities in multi-unit developments, apartments and mixed use developments to improve waste management, recycling and amenity.

You can download a copy of the toolkit and associated resources below.
