Plastics recycling

Hard plastics

Most hard plastic containers can go in your kerbside recycling bin – irrespective of the recycle triangle with the number identification. For more information refer to your local council.

Soft plastics

MWRRG has been working with local councils to introduce kerbside collections for flexible (soft) plastics. The collected plastics are then delivered to SKM Recycling. Participating councils currently include Boroondara, Cardinia, Hobsons Bay and Nillumbik. More information on this program is available here.

Residents in council areas which are not offering kerbside collections can drop off their soft or flexible plastics (ie: plastics that don’t spring back into shape when crushed) at many Coles, Woolworths and IGA stores. These stores provide plastic recycling bins for customers to recycle plastic food packaging. The bins generally accept cling wrap, bread bags, pasta bags, cereal bags, lolly bags, frozen food bags, carry bags, fresh produce bags and reusable ‘green’ bags. Check the RED Cycle soft plastic drop off locator to find your nearest participating store.

The plastic from these bins is collected by RED Group and recycled into bench seats for schools and kindergartens by Replas.

Many resource recovery centres and transfer stations also accept hard and soft plastics – check to see where to recycle items.
